“Wrestling with Rest”
The creation story told in the very first verses of Scripture concludes in peculiar fashion. God rests. Yet we live in a society (and often a church) that does not rest. The Protestant work ethic, the American Dream, industriousness, and consumerism all tend to prioritize efficiency, productivity, and life on the go. This presentation will wrestle with the juxtaposition of these realities. What do we do with a God who rests in a society that doesn’t? Does Sabbath connect in any meaningful way with life on the move? Why does the idea of rest challenge us so deeply? Though Sabbath rest stands as an elusive challenge, this presentation will dare to imagine rest as utterly central to the identity of both God and God’s people.
